Learning to Drive

Learning With a Fully Qualified ADI

All teaching is provided by a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

An Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Approved Driving Instructor has completed a rigorous qualification process that is both granted and regulated by the DVSA.

To qualify as an ADI, instructors must successfully pass three demanding examinations:

  • Part One – Theory & Knowledge Test

  • Part Two – Driving Ability Test

  • Part Three – Instructional Ability Test

Each of these tests is assessed at a standard significantly higher than that required of the general public.

ADI vs PDI – What’s the Difference?

There are two types of driving instructor:

  • ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) – Fully qualified and registered with the DVSA.

  • PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) – A trainee instructor who has passed Parts One and Two and is preparing for their final qualification test (Part Three – Instructional Ability).

When learning with a fully qualified ADI, you benefit from an instructor who has demonstrated the highest level of instructional competence.

Client-Centred Learning (CCL)

Instructional Ability is the key professional skill that your ADI brings to each lesson. This is delivered through Client-Centred Learning (CCL).

Client-Centred Learning is the DVSA’s recommended and preferred teaching approach throughout the driver training industry. CCL focuses on helping you become an independent, safe and confident driver for life.

What Does CCL Involve?

In practical terms, CCL involves:

  • Structured and purposeful questioning

  • Encouraging self-reflection and decision-making

  • Exploring thoughts, beliefs and feelings about driving

  • Developing responsibility for safe driving choices

Rather than simply telling you what to do, your instructor guides you to understand why you are doing it. This approach leads to:

  • Faster and more accurate skill development

  • Increased confidence

  • Stronger hazard awareness

  • Safer driving habits that last beyond your test

The goal is not just to pass the driving test — but to build the skills, awareness and judgement needed for a lifetime of safe driving.
